SFL Update

by Jack Begert

Hello readers! SFL elections are coming up, and I'm sure you are excited to choose the next generation of school leaders. The Student Faculty Legislature is a powerful body in our school that is comprised of fellow classmates and teachers working together to better our school. If you are a junior and are interested in running for the executive council, petition forms are located in the library and should be completed as soon as possible.

As president of the 10th grade and an active member of SFL, I am here to give you a little taste of what has been going on recently.

One of the most talked about events lately during SFL has been the exciting SFL day that we have planned for a classified date in the future. It is going to be great! -- Fun classes such as "History of Baseball" with Mr. Sheridan will be followed by a sort of carnival on the field that will feature sumo wrestling, American Gladiator jousting, other crazy activities/competition, and the staple foods: cotton candy and popcorn.

In addition, during the last few meetings, Mr. Wilson, the Elementary School Principal, has been working with us in analyzing our Elementary School experiences so that we can help improve the K-5 experience. Last meeting we were given a draft of a survey that seemed very promising. You should be seeing this survey within the next month or so.
Another hot topic during our meetings has been whether we should allow the incoming 8th graders or the exiting Seniors to vote in the upcoming SFL elections. After intense debating on both sides, we held a vote and decided that the current 8th grade class would not vote be allowed to vote, but the current Seniors will. Although there was great debate, the general consensus was that the 8th graders do not really know who any of these high school candidates are, and it would be unfair to base an entire 1/4 to 1/5 of the total votes on a single speech. For instance, everyone in the high school knows Justice, and that's why we all knew he would be a great president. The current Seniors are allowed to vote for the exact same reason. They have the best sense of what is really going on in the student body, and have probably known the running candidates the longest.

Dr. Kehoe has been giving us constant updates on the Swine Flu situation. I have heard some crazy rumors floating around during the last week, and I assure you, none of them are true. But the news has quieted down, so things don’t look as dire as before. Yet I would caution everyone to still remain careful--maintaining proper hygiene and washing hands frequently.

The SFL concert has been indefinitely postponed, but I assure everyone, it will happen... eventually. Don't panic, this just means that Apostrophe Catastrophe will have more time to prepare its repertoire to dazzle you.

Anyway, that's pretty much it! Just remember, any student is allowed to sit in on an SFL meeting and take part (you just can't vote). If you don't feel comfortable with that, please don't hesitate to ask anyone of us; we'd be happy to give you the low-down on what's going on in the SFL.

Until next time, I'm Jack Begert with SFL Update.
