Love is Thinner than Air
by William McGoughIf blood is thicker than water, then how can love be thinner than air? Well, if the international design team lead by Nicolas Dehnez has anything to say about it, it can be (by about 0.11", in fact).
What are you talking about? I'm talking about Adamo - the world's thinnest laptop. The name, "Adamo," when translated from Latin, literally means: "to fall in love with".* So why should you fall in love with a laptop? Click Read More to find out.
Wrong.
Now, prepare for your mind to be blown:
It's made by Dell.
At one time, I vowed that I would never buy a Dell - after all, aren't they those bulky plastic monstrosities that we have littered throughout the school?
Two years ago, well aware of this public perception, Dell hired a staff of internationally renowned designers to create a line of luxury products that would change that perception.
The result, perfectly timed for the recession, is the $2,000 + Adamo. This, it must be said, is not a laptop for everyone. It has a 13.4" extended wide screen, is about half an inch thick (thinner than the MacBookAir) 4 lbs, and drop-dead gorgeous (if a laptop could ever be described using such words.) One of the things I love about the Adamo is the fact that it is made entirely out of aluminum and glass: I hate the feeling of a flimsy, cheap plastic laptop. A laptop, in my opinion, should be like a nice watch: it should have a high-quality design in addition to being functional.
Besides the price, there are a few catches: there is no DVD drive (you can get a design-coordinated one for $120 extra), it has a very slow 1.2 GHz processor (which is okay for web browsing and Word, but don't try to edit any videos), and the two designs are impossible to choose between.
The Adamo comes in both a Silver/White (which Dell calls "Pearl") and a Black ("Onyx"). The back of the LCD screen is divided in half on both systems: the top half is a highly-reflective glass surface in the color of the system while the bottom half differs by system. The silver model features a chemically-etched geometric design while the black model sports a brushed aluminum panel:
In case you haven't realized, the Adamo is too good for your ordinary cardboard and foam box. Instead, the laptop ships in the clear-plastic display case shown below. And in case you have $400+ left over after the purchase, there are several designer handbags (and briefcases) designed to complement the Adamo.
I decided to take the plunge, so when I receive mine (I chose the black one), I will have a full review. Until then, you can go to the official website to see more:

*The astute reader and Latin student will note that it actually means, "I Fall in love with" - adamare would mean "to fall in love with".
